Government College, Quepem was an ‘empowerment through education’ programme initiated by the Government of Goa. The college first opened its doors in temporary premises at the Xeldem sub-station of the Electricity Department, to admit 100 students in June 1989. The college began its tryst with destiny with just the Arts and Commerce Streams with 8 faculty members.
Thence to its own premises in 1992; addition of the Science stream was in 1993, followed by the Department of Computer Science in 1994. The college was recognized u/s 2(f) in 1997 and u/s 12 (b) in 2004 of the UGC Act, 1956. The first NAAC accreditation peer team visited the college in March 2004 and in May 2004 GCQ was accredited with B+ grade.
GCQ has had above average results with several University ranks in our kitty. In commerce and science, our results have always been above 90% and in arts above 80%. In the sports arena, our prowess is legendary. We have established dominion status in several competitions. This year we added to our hat yet another feather: The State Championship in the Women’s Football Event. National representations are par for the course too.
In this, our Silver Jubilee year, we have several items on our agenda and foremost amongst this is NAAC accreditation. Several ‘wants and needs’ of the college that were in the pipeline are finally reaching fruition. This gives us confidence in readying ourselves for accreditation.
The NSS and NCC are twain programmes that inculcate the values of social change through service. The NSS has undertaken several projects from building kaccha roads, check dams and bunds for watershed management to raising funds for flood relief and for the differently abled. The NCC has made a strong impact on the personality of the students through its various camps, B and C certificate exams, and training on several fronts in keeping preparedness in meeting any exigency.
Village adoption scheme, empowering women, employment training are some of the other projects already on the floor. We diligently try to bind ourselves to the community in which we serve and by adding value to the life of this community, we derive our identity.
We have hosted and participated in several co- and extra- curricular activities, cultural events, seminars, workshops and symposia. We hope that our unflagging energy will see us setting new goals and scaling new heights.
The Post Graduate Department of Commerce & Research in Government College of Arts, Science and Commerce, Quepem, started in the year 2012 strives to develop Postgraduate and Research level programmes for creating professional manpower required by the current competitive world.
College currently caters to the needs of students in excess of 1200 from both under graduate and post graduate streams shows that the college has been growing from strength to strength.
